Your privacy,
explained.
Locked Documents keeps your personal files in an encrypted vault. Here is what that means, and what you need to know.
Encrypted before saving
File contents, titles, folders and private notes are encrypted on your device using AES-256-GCM before they are written to your vault. Your pattern unlocks the vault’s encryption key. If you enable recovery, a separate recovery phrase can also unlock that key.
The vault’s own filename and its location can still be visible in Files. Choose a filename that you are comfortable seeing there.
You choose where it lives
Save your vault On My iPhone or in a folder in iCloud Drive. When you choose iCloud Drive, Apple’s Files service stores and syncs the encrypted vault file. Locked Documents does not run a separate cloud storage service or require an app account.
Face ID is optional
You can enable Face ID or Touch ID on a supported device. The unlock key is protected by the device’s biometric security in the Keychain and is not configured to sync to other devices. Keep your pattern or separately saved recovery phrase safe, and enable biometric unlock again on a new phone.
Recovery stays in your control
Recovery is optional. The app generates a 24-word phrase on your device and checks that you saved it before enabling recovery. It stores an encrypted key envelope, not a readable copy of the phrase. We do not receive the phrase or provide an account-based reset.
Anyone with the phrase and the matching encrypted vault can unlock it. Keep the phrase separately. Without a usable pattern, recovery phrase or unlocked device, we cannot recover the files. Recovery still requires the vault or a backup file.
Copies stay where you put them
Importing copies a file into the vault. It does not remove the original from Photos or Files. Save a copy exports the original contents to Files. That copy is outside the vault’s encryption and keeps the protection of the place where you saved it. Taking a photo inside Locked Documents does not add a copy to Photos.
Manual backups are separate encrypted snapshots. They still need the pattern or recovery phrase that protected them when created. A backup does not create a recovery method that was never set up.
Privacy when you leave the app
The vault locks when you leave the app, and a privacy cover hides its content in the app switcher. This does not prevent screenshots or protect a copy you save outside the vault.
No added tracking
The app has no third-party analytics or advertising SDKs and does not ask you to create an account. Permissions for Photos, Files and the camera support the actions you choose, such as importing a photo or scanning a document.
